Sony Changes State of Play Event Description on Its Official Website, What Does This Mean?
In a strange and controversial move, Sony has changed the description of its regular PlayStation State of Play event on its official website. The change comes just days after reports emerged that the company is planning to air a new episode of the event next month, September.
As monitored by one of the members on icon-era forumPreviously, the event description included coverage of games from third-party PlayStation partners, independent developers, and PlayStation Studios. However, this description has now been changed to a single phrase: “From the world of PlayStation,” as you can see in the images below.
We don't know what the purpose behind this change in description is, but there are expectations from some analysts and insiders that Sony is trying to abandon the Playstation Showcase event, and rely entirely on State of Play as the main event to cover everything related to the PlayStation brand in the future.
This is also what the recent leaks that spoke about Sony's intention to broadcast an episode of the State of Play event next September indicate, instead of holding the Showcase event as was expected according to some informed sources.
If this information is correct, we expect to see a number of first-party titles coming from PlayStation Studios. We may also get a full reveal of the PS5 Pro, which is rumored to be revealed in the coming weeks. Of course, this will be in addition to the reveal of upcoming games and content from third-party companies and independent developers, but this may require episodes that are longer than the usual 30-40 minutes in previous episodes.
In any case, this information is still just speculation and inferences that are not confirmed by any official announcements or statements yet. But we may get more details in the coming days or weeks, or when the next Sony event is announced and we see if it is indeed a new State of Play event or a big Showcase event as expected.
